RANGERS have been linked with a move for Preston’s £2million-rated midfielder Daniel Johnson.

But Steven Gerrard has NOT made an official approach, despite serious interest in the 27-year-old player.

With playmaker Joe Aribo ruled out for up to six weeks, as Scotzine reported, the Ibrox boss want to add reinforcements in the engine room of his side.

Johnson has netted 43 goals in 219 appearances since arriving at Deepdale from Aston Villa in January 2015.

He is out of contract next summer and Gers could attempt to persuade ex-Hamilton Accies gaffer Alex Neil to part with the club’s Player of the Year.

Were Johnson to join, he would become their SEVENTH recruit of the transfer window.

He would follow the arrivals of Ianis Hagi, Jon McLaughlin, Calvin Bassey, Kemar Roofe, Cedric Itten and Leon Balogun.

Gerrard has Ryan Jack, Steven Davis, Scott Arfield and Glen Kamara to call on, but he realises injuries or suspensions could give him a headache.

Neil, speaking to the Scottish Sun, said: “It’s not in my hands as I don’t deal with the cash at the club because it’s not my role.

“I’ve got my input in that I want the players to sign, I think it’s clear that I want the players to sign.

“They’ve been key players for me in my whole time being here and I’d love them to stay, but ultimately the club will either get a deal done with them or they won’t.”
