ABERDEEN have been hit by a shattering blow as they prepare for the Premiership kick-off against Rangers at Pittodrie on Saturday with a 12.30pm start.

Disappointed Dons boss Derek McInnes will have to face Steven Gerrard’s outfit without the massive presence and goal threat of top scorer Sam Cosgrove in his frontline.

The prolific hitman faces being on the sidelines until December with a knee problem, according to a report on BBC Sport.

Cosgrove, 23, sustained the injury during the recent challenge game against Hibs and is now likely to spend a lengthy period out of action which give his manager a major headache as he searches for firepower at the crucial start to the campaign.

The English powerhouse claimed 23 goals last time out and has netted 44 in total from 87 matches for the north east outfit since arriving in a cut-price switch from Carlisle.

Cosgrove knocked back a £2.5million move to French second-tier club Guingamp during the summer, as Scotzine reported.
