TIERNEY OUT, SHANKLAND IN

RECORD-BREAKING £25million Kieran Tierney is OUT of the Scotland Euro 2020 squad for the double-header against Russia and San Marino later this month.

Championship striker Lawrence Shankland, of Dundee United, is IN Steve Clarke’s pool of players that was announced today.

Tierney, 22, has struggled for fitness since quitting Celtic for Arsenal in his big-money switch in August and has managed just 77 minutes of action in a Carabao Cup win over Nottingham Forest. He was left out by Unai Emery for the 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford last night.

On the inclusion of 13-goal Shankland, Clarke, speaking to Sky Sports News, said: “Obviously, he’s a goalscorer, he’s in form.

“I know Lawrence quite well from my time here in Scotland having watched him a few times and it’s not an area that we are overburdened with top strikers.

LUCKY 13…Dundee United goalscorer Lawrence Shankland

“Lawrence is in form and deserves his chance. The best way to look at him and gauge what level he is at is to bring him into the squad.

“It’s an opportunity to have him in the group, see how he works in the squad and, hopefully, he can score a few goals for us.”

There are also recalls for Sheffield United’s John Fleck and on-loan Alaves winger Oliver Burke, who had a spell at Celtic last season.

But there is no place for Southampton midfielder Stuart Armstrong and West Brom winger Matt Phillips, along with the injured Steven Naismith.

Clarke’s side sit fifth in Group I after two wins and four defeats in their opening six games and visit Russia on October 10 before hosting San Marino three days later.
