PARTICK THISTLE have sacked manager Gary Caldwell. The Firhill club are second bottom of the Championship without a win in five games and are due to welcome Dunfermline at the weekend.

A club statement read: “Partick Thistle Football Club informed manager Gary Caldwell that his contract has been terminated with immediate effect,.”

The former Celtic, Hibs and Scotland defender, 36, took charge in October last year following Alan Archibald’s departure.

The Jags have endured a difficult time since relegation from the top flight in 2018 and two draws and three defeats this time out have cost the former Wigan and Chesterfield boss his job.

Coincidentally, Thistle are due to play Caldwell’s former club Celtic, the holders of the trophy, in the Betfred League Cup quarter-final at Parkhead a week tonight.
