KIERAN TIERNEY’S £25m D-DAY: TIME TO PUT UP OR SHUT UP

0

KIERAN TIERNEY’S long-running transfer saga could finally be nearing a conclusion with Arsenal reported to be restructuring their failed £25million bid.

The London side have eight days to put up or shut up with the English transfer window closing in eight days’ time at 5pm.

There has been speculation, rumour and innuendo ricocheting between Parkhead and the Emirates since the move first came to light on June 22 when Celtic dismissed the initial and derisory bid of £15million for their 22-year-old Scotland international left-back.

The entire month of July has been spent with Gunners’ gaffer Unai Emery insisting he wanted the player who is under contract with the eight-in-a-row champions until 2023 and his Hoops opposite number Neil Lennon countering with regular statements that his club are in no rush to part with the defender and would continue to reject submissions that didn’t match their valuation.

FOR CLUB….Kieran Tierney in typical action pose for Celtic.

The original proposal was upped to £25million, but again it was kicked into touch by the Hoops hierarchy because of the lack of upfront cash and a list of add-ons that were deemed unrealistic and unacceptable.

Allegedly, diehard Celtic fan Tierney, with the opportunity of seeing his weekly wage soar to around three times his current pay rate, has let it be known he would accept the challenge of playing in the Premier League, but, equally, the supporters’ favourite, according to reports, has not been rocking the boat and will accept the decision of the club.

The full-back has not kicked a ball since the end of last term and is sidelined with a pelvic problem following a double hernia operation in the summer.

Today’s transfer update, from Sky Sports News, insists there is a new snag over just £2million.

Reporter Kaveh Solhekol told the Transfer Show: “I was speaking to someone who is involved in the negotiations and they were pulling their hair out.

“They say this deal is at a standstill because of just £2million.

“That is all that’s stopping it from happening – Arsenal and Celtic arguing over £2million.

“To put that into context, £2million is about the cost of a house near Arsenal in the north of London.”

FOR COUNTRY…Kieran Tierney on the move for Scotland.

It is unclear if the £2million relates to a clause in the proposed contract covering Arsenal’s qualification for the Champions League at the end of the season. They missed out this time around when they finished fifth in the league.

One thing is certain, though, is that the clock is ticking and the time for talking will soon be over.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have just spent a club record £72million on Lille forward Nicolas Pepe, subject to a medical.
