RANGERS are ready to battle Celtic for Wigan forward Nick Powell, who is due to come out of contract at the Championship outfit.

Initially, Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers appeared to be in pole position for the former Manchester United prospect, but Steven Gerrard is now ready to make his play for the forward.

Powell, who graduated from Crewe’s famous youth academy, joined up at Old Trafford in 2012, but failed to make an impact and was sent out on loan to Wigan, Leicester City and Hull.

The 24-year-old, who reportedly earns £1million-per-year, has also been linked with Premier League Brighton and Bundesliga big-spenders RB Leipzig.

Gerrard, who has already brought in Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis in loan deals in this transfer window, is ready to offer Powell a pre-contract.

The Ibrox gaffer also sent a representative to watch Charlton striker Karian Ahearne-Grant in action against Accrington Stanley yesterday. The youngster scored the winning goal with a penalty-kick.
