CELTIC have been linked with a loan move for Everton midfielder James McCarthy, a boyhood Hoops fan.

The 28-year-old Republic of Ireland star is returning to full fitness after a double leg break suffered almost a year ago.

McCarthy is eager to get back into action, but a first team place is unlikely to be on offer at Goodison.for the player who cost ex-gaffer Roberto Martinez £13million when he signed him from Wigan in August 2013.

Current boss Marco Silva sees a big part for the Glaswegian in his long-term plans, but would be agreeable to a temporary switch for the remainder of the campaign.

That has alerted the Scottish champions who came close to signing him from Hamilton Accies before his £1.2million move to Wigan in July 2009.

The Parkhead men, though, would face opposition from a trio of Premier League clubs in Fulham, Brighton and Burnley and Championship side Aston Villa.

McCarthy will come out of contract at the end of next season.
