STEVEN GERRARD admitted he is still looking for a central defender before transfer deadline day.

However, the Rangers boss, who saw his side beat Wigan 3-0 at Ibrox yesterday with goals from Alfredo Morelos, Nikola Katic and Umar Sidiq, would not be drawn on the club’s reported £200,000 bid for Hearts striker Kyle Lafferty.

Tynecastle gaffer Craig Levein has said he expects another offer for the 30-year-old Northern Ireland frontman who scored 18 goals last season after arriving from Norwich City.

Gerrard said: “I have nothing to say about it – he is a Hearts player. In terms of number of bids, I am not aware.”

Gers failed to seal a deal for Manchester City centre-half Kean Bryan and the rookie Ibrox manager admitted talks with the 21-year-old had ended.

The Liverpool legend added: “We have had loads of targets we have been monitoring and looking at. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get an agreement with Kean.

“He wants to keep his options open, we respect that. You can see quite clearly we need a centre-back, so that is an area we are definitely trying to add in. Hopefully, that will be sooner rather than later. ”

Asked if he wanted new players in before Sunday’s Premiership opener against Aberdeen at Pittodrie, Gerrard answered: “I would love that. I hope it is tomorrow. I am in a rush.”
