Both Celtic and Rangers are keeping an eye on the Aussie youngster Riley McGree who is currently playing for Club Brugge. The 19 year star reportedly was under watchful eye of Parkhead scouts when he was switching from Adelaide United to Club Brugge.
McGree who joined the Belgian club in March is yet to make his debut appearance. It is understood that Brugge could let him go in the summer, provided a fair price is paid. The Aussie teenager made 21 appearances for Adelaide United in his last season there and scored two goals.
The famous Albert Kidd, the former Dundee star plus the current technical director at Adelaide Olympic, disclosed how Celtic are hot on the trail of the talented youngster. According to him, Celtic used Tosh McKinlay to run the rule over him.
Now Rangers have also joined Celtic in keeping tap on the young Aussie star. Although McGree has a contract with Club Brugge to 2021, sources believe that the youngster could be allowed to leave and Glasgow could be his next port of call.
Rangers play Hamilton Academical this afternoon. For punters it looks like an obvious choice to bet on the home side rather than Hamilton. However this match will be anything but one sided and Hamilton picked up a point on their first visit to Ibrox last season.
Rangers did out-play the Accies in the last two games of Scottish Premiership, winning by 3-0 and 3-1. The Ibrox side go into today’s game only fourth on the Premiership table, so they will be desperate for the points.
However, Accies might be interesting for some punters as their form has improved in recent weeks after a long winless streak. They defeated Dundee 3-1 to send the Dens Park side to the bottom of the table. And they got draw against second placed Aberdeen. Celtic meanwhile are up against Ross County in today’s lunchtime kick-off. The Invincible league leaders have now made it 63 consecutive domestic games without defeat in domestic football. This record was achieved they beat St Johnstone comprehensively by 4-0 in their last match two weeks ago before the international break. Celtic actually beat their own record of more than a hundred years which dates back to 1915-17.
One man who is not intimidated by Celtic’s great run is the new Ross County manager Owen Coyle. The former Burnley boss is enjoying life in the Highlands and is relishing the prospect of breaking Celtic’s unbeaten run today.
He said, “Celtic are by far the best team in the league, but we stood toe-to-toe with Aberdeen, who are the second best team in the country.”
Ross County won their previous match against Motherwell by 3-2, and this took them to eighth place in the Scottish Premiership table. Although Ross County will be playing against the best of the best today, they are full of confidence at the moment and this could make the game interesting.
Who is Riley McGree?
Riley McGree started in the game at Gawler Eagles. He developed at the FFSA NTC (Football Federation South Australian National Training Centre). His big break came when he was picked by Adelaide United in 2014.
For two years, he played in Adelaide’s youth side, making his team debut against Western Sydney Wanderers as a sub. He had to wait for some more months though before he could play for his club in an FFA Cup. He scored his first goal in just his second A-League game which was played against Wellington Phoenix.
Adelaide United highly rated the talented midfielder and featured in the club’s Asian Champions League matches. In the match against Chinese Jiangsu Suning, he was in direct contention with Ramires- the Brazilian star.
McGree decided to move to Europe from Australia, joining the Belgian Club Brugge. Although, he failed until now to make his debut, McGree was noticed by the Australian national manager Postecoglou who included the talented youngster in his squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Iraq and UAE.
Postecoglou has high hopes for the McGree saying that he will be given an opportunity and that “he could be an exciting one in years to come.” It is worth mentioning that McGree has already represented the country at under 17 level. Additionally in the 2013 AFF Under 16 Youth Championship in Myanmar, he scored an incredible hat-trick in their match against Brunei.
Although McGree’s contract with Club Brugge runs until 2021, the club could part with the youngster if they are offered what they would regard as a fair price. With Celtic and now Rangers interested in the player, that could happen in January and McGree could be joining Celtic’s Aussie superstar Tom Rogic in Glasgow.
