It must have slipped Gordon Strachan’s mind too because he somehow managed to overlook both these players every Scotland match played this year.

The 2017 record of 3 wins and a draw and that due to a hugely unlucky England equaliser deep into stoppage time in June, would suggest that Strachan has turned things around after an awful start to the campaign.

Scotland are in touching distance of a play-off spot, two wins early next month and we should be there.

Of course the Scotland boss did make one decision that has transformed his side’s fortunes in the group. He looked to a winning Celtic team that Brendan Rodgers had playing great football and in March he decided to play 6 Celtic players.

They have been ever present ever since, indeed the clamour is for him to add a seventh Celt and Callum McGregor must surely be knocking on the door of a call-up some time soon.

But while Scotland are at sixes and sevens as far as selecting players from Celtic, across Glasgow another manager has decided to pitch in to make a claim for places in the team for some of his players.

Pedro Caixinha reckons he’d make an excellent Scotland manager.

“Rangers needs to have not only players in those national teams but also we want to have players in the Scottish national team,” said Caixinha.

“It’s one of the goals from us. We know they are doing well and we expect them at least to make the play-offs and we want to have a contribution from our players in that run.”

“It is important for our players when they go there that they receive minutes,” Caixinha patiently explained today.

“It is also important for our players, when they go there, that the national teams are fighting to be present in the great competitions of the world – and what better than a World Cup?

“It is important for them to come back, enjoy winning and have that spirit – that is always good for us as a team.”
