HIBS yesterday agreed new deals for five of their Championship winning stars, Ross Laidlaw, Lewis Stevenson, Marvin Bartley, Darren McGregor and the captain, David Gray, as manager Neil Lennon looks set to make a move for out of contract Celtic midfielder Kris Commons.
Commons had a successful mid-season emergency loan period at Easter Road and this turned out to be the only football action the former Scotland player has seen all season. He has not featured in Brendan Rodgers’ plans in this his final year at the Champions.
Lennon signed Commons for Celtic and aims to add him to the proposed summer signing of Efe Ambrose, who starred for the easter Road side in the last four months after completing a loan move from the Glasgow giants.
Aberdeen are also monitoring the Commons situation, with the player keen to remain in Scotland. However his close relationship with Neil Lennon make Hibs the big favourites to sign the Celtic man.
Meanwhile Hibs rewarded five of their league winning team just days after they lifted the Ladbrokes Championship Trophy at Easter Road after the 1-1 draw with St Mirren.
The quintet have signed up to be part of Neil Lennon’s assault upon the top 6 of the Premiership with all signing two year deals.
Lennon, has been busy in the transfer market already signing St Johnstone’s midfielder Danny Swanson on a pre-contract agreement.
And Lennon is hopeful that he will secure the Celtic duo Efe Ambrose and Kris Commons on a permanent deals. Ambrose has already expressed his hope that a deal can be agreed, especially as he becomes a free agent next month.
Hibs could also beat Rangers in the race to bring back Steven Whittaker to Scotland. Whittaker played for both sides and may decide to return to the club where it all began for the Scotland man.
Whittaker has been released by Norwich after the Canaries failed to win promotion back to the Premier League.
Hearts have also been credited with an interest in the full back.
