BARRY FERGUSON, who has been tipped for a backroom post at Rangers, believes Gordon Strachan must turn to CELTIC if he hopes to salvage Scotland’s World Cup hopes.
In fact, the former Ibrox skipper reckons the national team might as well turn out in green-and-white hoops when they face Slovenia in the must-win encounter at Hampden on Sunday evening.
Ferguson reckons all six of the Parkhead contingent – Craig Gordon, Kieran Tierney, Scott Brown, Stuart Armstrong, James Forrest and Leigh Griffiths – should figure in the vital qualifier.
And the ex-Clyde boss reckons there should be a place for former Celt Charlie Mulgrew, too.
He said: “As far as I’m concerned, Gordon Strachan has to go with what he knows this weekend and that will most probably result in him picking a Scotland team which is so heavily reliant on Celtic players that he might as well send the lot of them out wearing green and white hoops.
“Wednesday night was the time to assess his options. On Sunday, he needs to be sure about what he’s going to get from his men and for that reason he would be right to pick as many of Brendan Rodgers’ players as he can get his hands on.
“Last time out at Wembley, he had four of them in his starting 11 – Craig Gordon, Scott Brown, James Forrest and Leigh Griffiths.
“None of these players started against Canada and it showed.
“So now I expect him to find places for another two – Kieran Tierney and Stuart Armstrong – against the Slovenians when his own managerial neck goes back on the chopping board.
“And, as if that’s not enough, I’d also turn to Charlie Mulgrew, a player who only left Parkhead less than a year ago, to plug the hole at the heart of Scotland’s defence.
“Mulgrew was a positive from the other night. He wasn’t at his best, but it was good to see him back in a dark blue shirt.
“He’s a composed player and a guy who has performed at the highest level in club football.
“With Grant Hanley out of this squad, Mulgrew becomes an obvious candidate for Sunday night.”
Ferguson’s choice would be: Craig Gordon; Ikechi Anya, Russell Martin, Charlie, Mulgrew, Kieran Tierney; Scott Brown, Darren Fletcher; James Forrest, Stuart Armstrong, Robert Snodgrass; Leigh Griffiths.
