CELTIC MIDFIELDER ARMSTRONG AMONG NEWS BOYS IN SCOTLAND CALL-UP

0

GORDON STRACHAN has handed first full Scotland call-ups to Celtic’s Stuart Armstrong, Bournemouth’s Ryan Fraser and Fulham’s Tom Cairney.

The trio are included in a 30-man squad for the forthcoming friendly against Canada and the vital World Cup qualifier against Slovenia.

Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes and the Pittodrie fans will be surprised there are no places for Graeme Shinnie and Kenny McLean, who have been key players in the team’s charge to second place behind the champions in the Premiership.

McLean in particular has been man of the match in just about every Aberdeen match we’ve watched recently and surely deserved a call-up?
Armstrong, 24, capped 20 times by the Under-21s, has forced his way into the reckoning with some exceptional performances while scoring 11 goals, eight since the start of December.
Twenty-three-year-old winger Fraser’s form for Eddie Howe’s Premier League outfit has also been impressive.

Cairney, 26, was previously capped at Under-19 and Under-21 levels, but has been made to wait for his chance with the seniors.

But the Craven Cottage midfielder has shone in the Championship this season.

Former Rangers No.1 Allan McGregor, now on loan at Cardiff City from Hull City, returns almost a year after his last appearance – which came in the 1-0 win over the Czech Republic on March 24.

The Scots take on Canada at Easter Road on March 22 before the World Cup qualifier against Slovenia at Hampden Park four days later.
