RANGERS defender Rob Kiernan needed security protection after receiving verbal abuse at Ibrox on Saturday, according to a story The Sun, which apparently was lifted from fans reports on Rangers fans sites over the weekend.
The centre-half was dropped for the 1-1 weekend draw with Ross County after his display in the 4-1 trouncing from Hearts in Edinburgh in midweek.
Kiernan came under attack from a bitter mob of fans at the end of his team’s poor performance against the Highlanders that saw them drop to third in the Premiership, behind Aberdeen on goal difference.
The Dons, who beat Partick Thistle 2-0 at Pittodrie, also have a game in hand.
Perhaps crucially Aberdeen only have to face the runaway league leaders Celtic on league duty once more whereas the Ibrox side have to play them twice. Given the run of form that Celtic are in domestically, then that looks like being another advantage for Aberdeen.
The Gers player, who joined from Wigan in 2015, was apparently shaken by the level of vitriol aimed in his direction.
It is believed several stewards had to intervene to prevent the incident escalating.
Phillipe Senderos took his role against the Dingwall outfit with Kiernan unable even to get a place in Mark Warburton’s 18-man squad.
The Ibrox manager and the 28-year-old player will discuss the flashpoint when training resumes tomorrow.
Rangers fans this morning have been discussing the aftermath of the unsavoury incident given that it has now reached the mainstream media. There was some denial about the story actually being true but this was quickly put to bed by various supporters who were aware of the incident at the time.
Indeed it appears that The Sun got most of their story directly from a thread on at least one Rangers forum. Here are some Monday morning reactions to the story from Rangers supporters, which may shed some light on what actually happened to the defender who was linked with a £2million move from Ibrox to Fulham in the transfer window – with some saying that was a made up MSM story!
“It didn’t happen at the directors box it happened down at the Copland end of the main stand where the entrance to the players lounge is. This 100% happened. I was in the players lounge at the time & didn’t see it but I heard the commotion absolutely shameful from the fan involved and I think it was just one to be honest. Another fan who was also in the players lounge had to intervene to stop the guy attacking Kieran.”
“I sit in the main stand just along from the players lounge where this happened. RK was walking at half time with his misses and one guy said something to him (no idea what he said) RK reacted didn’t look too happy and had a go back at him ending up with other rangers fans having a go at the guy who shouted at him. Had a feeling it would get blown out of proportion by the papers. The security where useless by time they got there it was over. Don’t read too much into it just another case of the sun trying to cause trouble.”
“Stub a toe on a chair and by the time the Sun report it, it’ll be a broken Ankle!”
“Fans have a right to have a go at players when they are not performing so long as it done in the correct manner.”
“If he puts in a puts in performances like that then he deserves a bit of verbals. No idea what was said so if it wasn’t football related then fair enough but if it was then kiernan should keep the heid down.”
“If our players can’t be sure of being safe inside Ibrox, then where can they feel safe. Absolutely disgraceful.”
“We really have some absolute morons in our support. I’m not a fan of him but ffs.”
