DONS STAR’S HAMPDEN HOPES

0
ABERDEEN defender Mark Reynolds believes it could be third time lucky for his side when they meet Celtic in the Betfred League Cup Final at Hampdfen on November 27.
He has seen the Dons lose 4-1 to the Hoops at Parkhead in August and again 1-0 at Pittodrie on Saturday to shed a maximum six points in two crucial encounters.
However, Reynolds reckons the spirit shown at the weekend illustrates they have the qualities to upset the odds and win the trophy.

He said: “Celtic have recruited well, they have got stronger, but I think we have, as well. We went toe to toe with them and I don’t think anyone could say they outfought us.unspecified-208

“We came up short by one goal, that’s all there was in the game. They got a goal from nothing, we were set to defend it, but Shay Logan’s header didn’t go far enough.

“It has landed right at Tom Rogic’s feet, he’s taken a touch and it’s a great finish.

“But we will take confidence from the way that we competed and use it ahead of the Betfred Cup Final.

“This was a big game for Celtic, they knew if they didn’t turn up we could punish them.

“So when that game comes around, between the top two teams in Scotland, it will be a great game.”

Derek McInnes’ side are now 10 points behind Brendan Rodgers’ men in the title race having played a game more, but Reynolds insisted: “It is not disheartening because we know what they are.

“They’re a machine who just grind out those league games. They have found a new gear this season and are batting teams aside. The gap is there because they are winning and you can’t argue with that.

“We feel we’re closer to them than the league table suggests, but it’s easy to say that and all we can do is try to pick up as many points as we can.”

Aberdeen are on the same 18 points tally as both Hearts and St Johnstone and all three are a point behind Rangers who climbed to second place after a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Kilmarnock at Ibrox.
It is looking like an exciting race is going to emerge for the second place in this season’s Premiership with Celtic already looking like run away winners.
