Celtic 2-1 Inter Milan

25th May 1967

It would be hard to choose Celtic’s greatest squad ever, but the biggest number of players would have to come from the 1966/67 team that became the first British side (and still the only Scottish one) to win the European Cup.

Until then, the competition had only been won by clubs from Spain, Portugal, and Italy, and when they faced an Inter Milan side that won the last two of three competitions, it was expected that the status quo would continue.

But Celtic, who had already dominated domestically, possessed strength and courage. These qualities, and their ferocious comeback after going down 1-0, would earn them the nickname the Lisbon Lions. Two goals in the last half hour saw Celtic crowned Kings of Europe on a night that has yet to be topped by another Scottish side.
