Celtic 1-3 Inverness Caley Thistle
Third round, February 8th 2000
After the original tie was postponed, the minnows at the time Inverness, were rising through the leagues but were major underdogs coming into this game against the Premiership side who were struggling on all fronts under their new man John Barnes.
The game itself was played on a bitterly cold Tuesday night in Glasgow and it wasn’t long before Barry Wilson fired Inverness ahead getting on the end of Paul Sheerin’s cross, take a look here. The lead did not last long as a young Mark Burchill equalised for Celtic a minute later as he capitalising on sloppy defending from Caley Thistle.
But it was Inverness who were to win the day as Bobby Mann’s header was deflected past Jonathan Gould in the Celtic goal to give Inverness the lead again and the tie was put beyond doubt in the second half when Regi Blinker fouled Barry Wilson in the box to hand the Highland side a penalty and it was Paul Sheerin who slid the ball home, and that’s the way it stayed as Inverness showboated their way to one of the most famous upsets in Scottish Cup history.
