Dundee United sign former West Ham midfielder Guy Demel

Dundee United have announced the signing of experienced midfielder Guy Demel until the end of the season, subject to international clearance.

Demel, who can play both in defence and midfield, becomes Mixu Mixu Paatelainen’s second signing and the Finn hopes that the 34-year-old can bring much needed experience to what is a very inexperienced and youthful side – currently languishing at the bottom of the Scottish Premiership- and will wear the number 55 shirt.

The midfielder played 82 times for West Ham United in the English Premier League between August 2011 and June 2015, with his final game for the Hammers being the 2-0 defeat to Liverpool on January 31st as a second half substitute.

Demel came through the ranks at Nimes before moving to Arsenal in 2000, but a year later he left the London club and spent four years with Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund playing 35 times. In 2005 he moved to Hamburg, where he played alongside the likes of Rafael van der Vaart and former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy – making 139 appearances for Die Rothosen. Before moving to West Ham in 2011.

He has been capped 35 times for the Ivory Coast, representing them in the 2006 and 2008 African Cup of Nations, as well as the 2006 and 2010 World Cup finals before retiring from international football in 2012.

Dundee United manager Mixu Paatelainen, speaking exclusively to the official Dundee United website, said: “Guy comes with a lot experience and fantastic pedigree. He can add a lot to our squad. He is a powerful player but above all a good footballer. He will be a strong character in our dressing room and I am delighted to start working with him.”

Demel added: “Once I spoke to the Head Coach, I was excited by the challenge of Dundee United and the role he has planned for me. I want to identify myself with the Club. I have many years of experience in football and if I can use my knowledge to help the younger players here that is what I will do. I have been training hard and I can’t wait to play for Dundee United. I am ready as soon as the Head Coach needs me.”

Dundee United welcome Hamilton Accies to Tannadice this Saturday with Demel expected to be part of the squad.
