Morton are League One champions

0

Greenock Morton have won the Scottish League One title and automatic promotion to the Championship after beating Peterhead 3-1 at Cappielow.

Despite starting the day off at the top of League One with a superior goal difference to fellow title contender Forfar, the Greenock side fell behind to an early goal from Gary McDonald.

However, when Peterhead’s Scott Ross was sent off, that gave Morton a boost to push forward and towards securing all three points and with that the title.

Goals from Michael Miller, Mark Russell and Declan McManus saw Morton run out 3-1, winning the league by two points after Ayr United beat Forfar Athletic and Stranraer ending up second on the final day of the season.

Morton’s promotion to the Championship will also see the return of the Renfrewshire derby with St.Mirren all but consigned to relegation after their 3-0 defeat to Partick Thistle. With three games remaining and eight points behind Motherwell – it is nigh on impossible for Gary Teale’s St.Mirren side to escape the drop.
