Football Virals: Birthday tweet from Celtic to Aleksandar Tonev backfires


How can one simple birthday tweet become a PR faux pas within minutes of posting? Ask football fans to send in their birthday messages to a player that was recently charged and found guilty of racially abusing a fellow professional football player.

That is what Celtic have done on Tuesday morning as they asked Celtic fans to send in their birthday messages to celebrate and congratulate Bulgarian winger Aleksandar Tonev on turning 25.

Here are just a few samples of the messages sent to Tonev to wish him a happy birthday:



The midfielder on loan from Aston Villa was banned for seven matches for racially abusing Aberdeen defender Shay Logan in September 2014, on his debut against the Pittodrie side. He subsequently lost an appeal against his ban.
