Glasgow City have announced the signing of Rhonda Jones from SWPL rivals Celtic.
The 35-year-old defender has been capped 116 times for Scotland and will bring a wealth of experience to Glasgow City, who recently lost defender Eilish McSorley to Swedish side Mallbacken.
After securing the services of Jones, City head coach Eddie Wolecki Black, said: “It is no secret that two years ago I tried to bring Rhonda to the club. This season has saw us capture the signing of a player that has been a fierce competitor against us in the past. I believe Rhonda will bring a lot of positives to the club. If you are going to play for Glasgow City then it is imperative that you fight for the right to play in every game and with that in mind she is my type of player – a leader, a fighter and a talker.
“I am certain we will be very strong defensively this season and the signing of Rhonda is a step on the right direction. I wish her well and look forward to working with her over the coming weeks and months.”
Jones, speaking to the official Glasgow City website, added: “After speaking to Eddie about his ambition and the team’s goals for the season, it just made sense to join Glasgow City at this pivotal point in my career.
“City have been the team to beat since my return from the States in 2009 and I have always enjoyed playing in the tough matches against them. I’ve watched them grow and develop at a faster rate than any other SWPL team and I want to be part of a club that puts women’s football first. I have joined Glasgow City to help the team reach all of their objectives this season and I am very excited to be part of a club that has continually set the standard and pushes for excellence in Scottish Women’s Football.
“I’m thankful to the coaching staff and my ex-teammates at Celtic for the last 3 seasons and wish them all the best in the future.”
