SWPL champions Glasgow City are through to the quarter finals of the UEFA Women’s Champions League for the first time after beating Swiss champions FC Zurich 4-2 on the night [5-4 on aggregate].
Cinzia Zehnder had given the visitors the lead against the run of play seconds before half time, but Abbi Grant and Leanne Ross scored early in the second half to give City the lead. However, that lead was short-lived as City gifted the Swiss an equaliser through Fabienne Humm, giving the visitors the initiative in the game.
With the game looking as if it would end in favour of Zurich, a long-range strike from Jo Love and a header from Suzanne Lappin secured a memorable victory for Eddie Wolecki Black’s side and a place in the quarter finals alongside the likes of Wolfsburg, Frankfurt, Brondby and PSG.
As the final whistle sounded, the players on the Glasgow City bench raced onto the pitch celebrating their success, alongwith the injured keeper Lee Alexander, who was substituted at half time with a suspected broken collarbone but had refused to go to hospital to watch the second half of the match.
