Highland Football League weekend review & highlights: 22nd February 2014


Brora Rangers took their goal difference to +73 after a 11-0 thrashing over Strathspey Thistle. This result shows that the Cattachs are looking unstoppable.

It won’t be all easy through for Brora, Nairn County picked up another win at home to Rothes winning 5-1, Conor Gethins netted his 101th goal in 101 games for Les Fridge’s side with Michael Morrison, Stuart Leslie and Robbie Duncanson also finding the net, Liam Forbes netted a consolation for Rothes.

Clachnacuddin v Formartine United was called off and Inverurie Locos took advantage by winning 2-1 at Cove Rangers and jumped into 3rd, Dean Donaldson and Jamie Michie gave the Locos a two goal cushion, Eric Watson pulled a goal back wasn’t enough to salvage anything out of the contest.

Deveronvale cemented their place in 5th position after a 5-2 victory away to Fraserburgh, Scott Henry gave Vale the lead before Peter Bruce equalised in the 23rd minute, 8 minutes later, a Scott Barbour penalty put the Broch in front before the banffers came back and goals from Colin Charlesworth, Martin Charlesworth, Greame Rodger and Ricky Wardrope did the damage.

Forres Mechanics took advantage of being at home and recorded a 6-0 win over Fort William, the win makes sure that Forres were unbeaten during February.

Gordon Connelly picked up his 1st victory in charge of Wick Academy after a 3-2 win at home to Huntly in a game which included a sending off for Craig Dorrat.

It has been a bad week for Turriff United and Buckie Thistle piled on more misery with a 2-1 win with Chris Angus’s brace seperating the sides.

Keith picked up two late goals to defeat Lossiemouth 3-1 in the Moray derby, in a game which only one out of three penalties landed in the back of the net.
