Highland Football League review: Brora Rangers move top

Brora Rangers have moved to the top of the Press and Journal Highland League with another professional victory on the road. The Cattachs defeated Lossiemouth 3-0 thanks to goals from Martin McLean, Steve Mackay and Zander Sutherland, taking them to an impressive 49 points from 18 games.

The Cattachs’s title challengers Formartine United and Inverurie Locos both suffered setbacks as they were on the wrong side of 2-1 defeats to Deveronvale and Clachnacuddin respectively.

Nairn County are certainly in no mood to let their title fight go away from them, Les Fridge’s outfit made the trip along the A96 to Keith and emphatically beat the Maroons 8-1.

Cove Rangers got back to winning ways with a 5-2 victory against Wick Academy with Cove manager Kevin Tindal saying after the game that they aren’t out the title race yet.

Fraserburgh picked up their 7th win on the bounce after a 3-1 win away to Forres Mechanics. Graham Fraser gave the can-cans an early lead however goals from John Chalmers, a Stephen Fraser OG and Scott Barbour sealed the win for the Broch.

There was six goals in a 45 minute spell at Claggan Park where Fort William and Buckie Thistle shared the points in a 3-3 stalemate with Fort’s Andy Martin getting the goal of the weekend with a stunning 40 yard strike.

Turriff United got themselves back on track after four games without a win with a 3-0 win over Rothes, Stuart Cumming, Aaron Shand and Nicholas Gray got the goals for the Haughs outfit.

Meanwhile Strathspey Thistle against Huntly was called off due to a frozen pitch.
