SPFL League Two Preview – 31st August 2013

If there was any evidence needed of how last year’s league had been turned upside down then this weekend’s fixtures is it! We have top v bottom clashes that last season would have meant the likelihood of wins are reversed from what may be expected today. East Stirlingshire, Albion Rovers and Stirling Albion sit up top whilst Peterhead, Montrose, Elgin City and Queen’s Park are at the bottom. Last season East Stirlingshire and Stirling Albion fought to stay off the bottom and Peterhead, Elgin City and Queen’s Park were all play off contenders –will the topsy turvy continue this weekend?

Game of the day

East Stirlingshire v Peterhead

The season has to start soon for Jim McInally’s team. They are stuck down the wrong end and have not won a competitive league fixture yet. They are without Bryan Gilfillan, Graeme Sharp, Callum MacDonald, Ryan Strachan and Dean Cowie; Andy Rodgers returns up front. The home side have no Rhys Devlin, Michael Herd or Nathan Shepherd though they will have Scott Maxwell, Ross O’Donoghue and Jamie Glasgow. East Stirlingshire are going for win four on the spin and I think the Blue Toon might finally find their mojo today and halt that winning streak.

Albion Rovers v Montrose sees an undefeated Rovers face a Montrose chasing their first win. Rovers are without Scott Sally and Barry Rustle whilst Montrose welcome back Ross McCord. It will be a tough one between them and perhaps settled by a s ingle goal. Queen’s Park v Stirling Albion has the home side that has not got any points, been hampered by suspensions and injuries already this season facing a Bino’s side that apart from losing to East Stirlingshire last weekend is flying high! The Spiders have James Baty back but no Paul Gallagher, David Anderson, Bernard Coll or Rickie Laimie. Stirling have David Weatherson in the squad alongside Jamie Bishop but no Philip Johnston. I feel a draw coming on…

Elgin City v Clyde sees the Borough Briggs side chasing their first win with Craig Gunn facing a late fitness test, no Sam Urquhart, Mark Nicolson or Mark Millar. Elgin could do with concentrating for 90 minutes as their draw with Peterhead last weekend came about due to carelessness whilst Clyde got their noises in front in the second half against Queen’s Park and never looked back last Saturday. Gavin Brown is back for the Bully Wee whilst Sean Fitzharris, David Marsh and Stefan McCluskey are out. I think Clyde might just maintain their wee run. Finally Berwick Rangers v Annan Athletic has both teams currently active in the transfer market as they try and secure more personnel in a league they are struggling to find wins in. Ross Gray is a doubt with Dougie Bryden out for the Borderers whilst Martin McNiff has arrived once again on loan from Dumbarton to Annan though Stephen Sloan and Chris Jardine are out for the visitors. I reckon this will be very tight and could go either way…
