SPFL League One – Friday Night Preview

Match of the night… Airdrieonians v Rangers

It might have conjured up visions in the past of being a huge fixture and it was only 1992 that it was even a Cup Final but tonight’s fixture between these two clubs could act as a message for all clubs within Scottish Football. Both have had financial woes, both have had wrangles over name changes and both have had to rebuild. It is probably there that the similarities end as the home side tonight have nowhere near the finance of their visitors nor the boardroom wrangling.

For Ally McCoist it is another artificial pitch and the hope will be that they can continue their current fine league run. In terms of selection they shall be missing Kyle Hutton and Ross Perry whilst in the unlikely category fall David Templeton and Emilson Cribari. Airdrie meanwhile fielded a side on Tuesday night that was filled with younger faces than are likely to be evident tonight. Jimmy Boyle made 9 changes from the team that lost to Stenhousemuir to the one that lost to Queen of the South in the Ramsdens Cup. John Boyle is definitely out but he hopes to see Jamie Barclay and Nathan Blockley available.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the 1992 Cup Final scoreline may be replicated tonight. Rangers will not have it all their own way but two games for a part-time team in four days is tough for any small squad.
