SFL DIVISION THREE PREVIEW – 27TH APRIL 2013

irnbru-sflI did say that now the title was won that the Blue Toon should fancy their chances at Ibrox and oh boy how they took them! A 2-1 win may not sound like an earth shattering score line but it created huge cracks in a fragile regime at Ibrox. You can blame anyone and everything for the trouble off the pitch at Rangers but the fact that Peterhead have made the play offs is THE new story of last weekend. Unless of course you count Queen’s Park’s demolition of East Stirlingshire that means that they too are now in the play offs. The one remaining spot has been taken up at present by Berwick Rangers who got into 4th by defeating their rivals, Elgin City. Between the Borderers, Elgin and Montrose we shall discover who will take the last play off spot over the next fortnight. As East Stirlingshire are firmly last with wins for both the Binos and the Bully Wee alongside yet another loss for Annan the last 4 spots in Scottish Football are beginning to look very predictable.

Game of the day for me is Montrose v Queen’s Park. Montrose may have lost 1-0 away to Clyde last weekend but their on/off form gives me hope that this week will be an up turn. Queen’s Park won 5-1 thanks to David Anderson, Sean Burns, Aidan Connolly and a Jamie Longworth double so are safe for the play offs. Montrose sit 3 points behind Berwick and if they don’t win their hopes are more or less finished. Montrose have the easier run in than Berwick but first they must despatch the 3rd placed Spiders. Queen’s Park have suffered similarly up and down form and if they don’t turn up today will make the run in that wee bit more exciting.

Berwick Rangers v Annan Athletic sees a home side that won 2-1 against Elgin City, killed of their hopes and all but secured theirs. Darren Lavery and Kevin MacDonald brought them back from behind for the win whilst the visitors are seriously struggling. Annan lost again last weekend – this time to Stirling Albion. Jim Chapman’s side are seriously on the slide and as Berwick need a win to all but secure the play offs as they play Rangers at Ibrox next weekend it could be interesting to see if they achieve it. Stirling Albion v Elgin City has turned into quite a tussle for 6th spot. Stephen Day got the Binos goal in their win at Annan whilst Stuart Leslie gave Elgin an early lead against Berwick only for them to lose 2-1. Elgin are also still mathematically in the hunt for 4th but a lot of other things have to happen to make their case. I think this might help them win today but results elsewhere will determine it was too little and too late.

Peterhead v Clyde is an academic game with little at stake. Peterhead got the play offs with a 2-1 win at Ibrox thanks to Scott Ross and Rory McAllister last Saturday whilst Clyde’s 1-0 win at home to Montrose thanks to Pat Scullion dented Montrose’s campaign and made little difference to the Bully Wee’s. Peterhead will be looking to pick up some form of momentum for the play offs so I fancy their chances this afternoon. Rangers v East Stirlingshire is a top v bottom clash that is another one with little or no significance. Rangers though will be keen to avenge their 2-1 defeat last weekend. Lee McCulloch got their goal and will be desperate for the Ibrox side to finish in style. East Stirlingshire have been on the end of many hammerings this season and their 5-1 defeat at Hampden with Jamie Glasgow getting a consolation hardly augers well. My Ibrox mole has a pal who bet heavily on a 10 goal win for Rangers at some point during the season. If there was ever a chance of it happening…
