SFL DIVISION THREE PREVIEW – SATURDAY 9TH MARCH 2013

0

Staying 20 points ahead Rangers got a 3-1 home win whilst 2nd placed Queens Park lost last Saturday at home then went to Elgin and won midweek. Their loss had been against Montrose who are sitting very pretty in 3rd spot. Like the 2nd Division, the story is more about the battle for 4th spot as Peterhead recorded an unexpected loss at Clyde, Berwick drew at Annan and then beat Stirling Albion on Tuesday whilst Elgin lost twice – once midweek to the Spiders after losing to the Binos. The bottom of the SFL has 1 point separating the rest. Stirling, Annan and East Stirlingshire have 29 points whilst Clyde are sitting at the bottom on 28. Exciting? Absolutely…

Game of the Day has to involve the misfiring duo – Peterhead v Elgin City. Peterhead lost 2-0 last weekend at Clyde and Ryan Strachan even got sent off to complete the misery. Elgin have lost twice at home over the last 7 days. They were beaten 2-1 by Stirling Albion last Saturday with Stuart Leslie having equalised before they lost and then Paul Millar, Craig Gunn and Brian Cameron in the 92nd getting their 3 goals in a 5-3 defeat to Queen’s Park.  Things have not been going well at the Borough Briggs! This is the “other” Highland derby day and for me ought to be a home win as the Blue Toon should recover from their shock quicker than their Highland rivals; stranger things have happened though…

Rangers v Annan Athletic has a Rangers side that managed a 3-1 defeat of East Stirlingshire at Ibrox after they went 1 behind. An Andy Little double and Lee McCulloch back amongst the goals meant a comfortable day for Ally McCoist’s men. Annan drew 2-2 at home to Berwick Rangers thanks to goals from Ally Love and Scott Chaplain; Jim Chapman finally getting something for his endeavours. This week my mole has been preoccupied with matters in the SPL as he has been targeting other people making predictions with knowing nods and guffaws at the temerity of it all so he is no use… let’s be clear if there are not 3 points added to the Rangers’ total at quarter to five then we shall be more than surprised; a crisis may be called up the marble staircase…

Berwick Rangers v Montrose is a fascinating tie. Berwick drew 2-2 away to Annan last weekend and Scott Dalziel had opened the scoring before it was 1 all then Fraser McLaren put them ahead again before they got pegged back, again. Midweek they won 1-0 at home to Stirling Albion with a Lee Currie free kick in the 87th minute the difference between the sides. Montrose went to Hampden last Saturday and won 2-1 thanks to Leighton McIntosh and Martin Boyle getting them the win after going behind. It is that spirit that may see them through this tie and keep their 3rd place safe as the others struggle to get underneath them.

Clyde v Queen’s Park ought to be a walk in the park for the Spiders but Clyde’s 2-0 win at home to Peterhead makes that look less likely. Kevin Watt and a John Sweeney penalty got their 1st win in 7 games! Queen’s Park have had a roller coaster week with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Montrose last Saturday – Michael Keenan opened the scoring – followed by a 5-3 win at Elgin. A Sean Burns double followed by goals from Lawrence Shankland, Blair Spittal and Michael Keenan taking all 3 points. An away win is hard to see past but Clyde will want off the foot of the table…
