SFL DIVISION THREE PREVIEW – SATURDAY 12TH JANUARY

5

Yet another SFL league with run away leaders as Rangers, despite a draw at home to Elgin City last weekend, sit comfortably seventeen points ahead of the rest. It appears now that what we should be betting on is the margin of victory or the date at which the league is secured! All other bets may be off! Queens Park are right back into the play offs and have got a decent second spot as they sit above Peterhead and Montrose with two games in hand over both of them. Montrose got the single goal victory against Peterhead last weekend that took third spot but all three are looking over their shoulders at Elgin City, possibly Berwick and maybe Annan who are just behind them. Peterhead are in the play offs through goal difference so they will want to consolidate in some way soon. All three bottom teams lost last weekend with Stirling Albion and Clyde making a decent contest of it and losing by the odd goal in five.

My Game of the Day today is Queens Park v Peterhead. There is only one point between them and the Spiders under Gardner Speirs will want to make some headway in putting distance between them and the rest of the pack. With two games in hand they are in pole position but only if they can maintain their form. This could be the year for promotion for them but for Speirs it will be once again the dreaded play offs! For Jim McInally he will relish the chance to secure their play off position. I reckon this could be a tough one for both managers and who knows who will walk away triumphant at the end of it!

The league leaders have Rangers v Berwick Rangers with which to contend. It is always hard to think of this tie without reference to 1967 but the wee Rangers will settle for a similar scoreline to that game. After beating East Stirlingshire last weekend two nil and seeing themselves closer to the play offs they would have wanted a more straight forward game than away at Ibrox. I cannot see the derring do attitude of Elgin from last weekend being allowed to return in the guise of the Borderers this weekend. Annan Athletic v Montrose has the team in the other play off berth, Montrose travelling south to an Annan side still without a permanent manager. Since December both have shared similar fates with wins, losses and draws but Montrose’s defeat of Peterhead last weekend was the type of game, if you win, you should really be looking to beat many of the other teams in the league including the teams below you like Annan…

Elgin City v East Stirlingshire has an Elgin side that stopped the slide at Ibrox against an East Stirlingshire that really needs to find some form and points otherwise they will drop below Stirling Albion – again! Both are suffering from bad results so this could end up being an absolute cracker or a boring afternoon when you dream of Tesco’s… Finally Clyde v Stirling Albion holds fascination because it is all about who could end up at the bottom of the heap. Clyde have been playing better as have the Binos but the reality for both is that it would have been hard to play any worse! I reckon this, just like the one before it could be the game you would have wanted to go and see or the one you were glad to avoid…
