SPL invite Dundee to replace Division Three bound Rangers

The decision to promote Dundee was taken at the SPL’s annual meeting this afternoon, which means that Dunfermline Athletic will not have a stay of execution and will begin the new season in the First Division.

Dundee, finished second in Division One last season some 24 points behind league champions Ross County.

Dens Park chief executive Scot Gardiner said: “We were always confident that, on sporting merit, it would be us, but we have been in limbo for a few weeks and, only now, can we start to plan properly for the SPL. We have a very good squad of players and can now add to that squad.”

However Dunfermline are seeking legal advice after their snub by the SPL, but for the time being Dundee are preparing for life in the SPL with their first game of the season away to Kilmarnock on August 4th.

With Dundee promoted the Dundee city rivalry will be rekindled in the Scottish top flight, Airdrie United have taken their place in the First Division and Stranraer promoted to the Second Division.
