Ross County party to victory over Dundee

With the league title in the bag you would have thought Ross County might have lost a bit of their competitive edge however that was not the case with both sides receiving red cards late on. Ross County started the better of the two teams and took the lead on nine minutes through man of the match, Michael Gardyne. The winger latched onto a deflected through ball running straight towards goal jinking past a Dundee defender before fooling Douglas in goal and coolly sliding the ball into the bottom right corner.

Dundee tried to respond to this early goal on 20 minutes when Ryan Conroy shot from just outside the box; however his effort went wide of Fraser’s goal.

Dundee came very close to equalising on 23 minutes when a Gary Irvine shot from just outside the Ross County box needed an acrobatic save from Michael Fraser as the ball looked destined for the top right hand corner. This was Dundee’s best effort of the afternoon.

Iain Vigurs missed a sitter just before half time after some nice one two passing between him and Rocco Quinn in the Dundee box, however Vigurs volley went well wide when it would have being easier to at least test Douglas in goal.

The second half started the same as the first with Ross County dominating. Colin McMenamin had a great opportunity to extend County’s advantage when he was put through on goal from a great pass from a County defender, however Douglas came out quickly and dived down to block McMenamin’s shot.

However McMenamin was not to be denied and on 61 minutes he got his goal. Some lovely play out on the wing saw VIgurs get into the box where he chipped a lovely cross in for McMenamin who head the ball down into the bottom left corner from no more than 4 yards catching a minor deflection of Dundee’s Gary Irvine.

The Ross County fans were still celebrating their second goal when they got their third through Michael Gardyne. The goal was a low header into the bottom right corner as a quick free kick from Ross County caught the Dundee defence of guard as Gardyne got away from his man and was in space when he the ball past Douglas.

With the game now past Dundee the Ross County fans celebrated to the annoyance of the Dundee players and fans. Paul Lawson even tried to lob Rab Douglas from his own half on 73 minutes to a round of applause from the home faithful even though the attempt was nowhere near going in.

The only blotch on Ross County’s day came on 80 minutes when Rocco Quinn was sent off for retaliating to a Kevin McBride tackle. Kevin McBride’s reaction also saw himself get sent off and it looked like the two would kick off again in the tunnel as they both headed towards their dressing rooms. Several other players on both sides were also yellow carded and cautioned for the incident.

In the end Ross County ran out comfortable 3-0 winners and at the full-time whistle showed their appreciation to the fans by partying it up at the side of the pitch and doing a lap of owner to choruses of ‘Simply the best’.

After the match Derek Adams stated that his team were simply the best: “It was quite fitting that the last tune of the day was simply the best, as we were simply the best today and have being the being simply the best all season. A performance like that is simply the best. We have a team there that showed true grit and determination, passed with style against a very good Dundee team off the park. We are enjoying the occasion very well.”

Dundee manager Barry Smith was humble in defeat: “We were beaten by the better team today. It was disappointing from our point of view, the boys should be showing more, but thats why their league champions throughout the season. We went on a run last season, the more games you don’t get beat – that breeds confidence. Ross County have being on a magnificent run and deserve to win the league.”
