Co-operative MacTavish Cup – First Round

Kinlochshiel 2 Kingussie 6

Ronald Ross made a surprise first appearance of the season and he grabbed a hat-trick to help holders Kingussie to a 6-2 win over Kinlochshiel at Kirkton. Martin Dallas put the visitors into the lead against the run of play on 7 minutes but ‘Shiel leveled through Keith MacRae. Ronald Ross came on in place of the injured Iain Borthwick with Ryan Borthwick dropping back into defence. His presence gave the visitors a boost. A blistering Craig Dawson shot into the top corner of the net put the holders in front again and Kingussie took control. Martin Dallas got his second to give the Kings a 3-1 lead at the break. Ronald Ross made it 4-1 a minute into the second half and he went on to complete his hat-trick with two more predatory strikes either side of a Finlay MacRae penalty. The 6-2 win was Russell Jones’ side’s best performance of the season.

Beauly 4 Lovat 3

Many suggested that the match of the day in the Co-operative MacTavish Cup first round would be the meeting between fierce rivals Beauly and Lovat at Braeview Park. And the game lived up to its billing with Marine Harvest North Division 1 Beauly edging out their Orion Group Premiership neighbours by the odd goal in seven. Last year’s first team keeper Martin Davidson took the decision to play outfield this season and successive hat-tricks for the second team earned him a place in the top side. He scored twice as Beauly came from 3-1 down to win 4-3 with Jamie MacLennan getting a 79 minute winner.
