
Phillips has played for England at under-20 level but qualifies to play for Scotland through his grandparents. On calling up the Blackpool midfielder, Levein said: “I’m very excited about the young lad. Matt’s family alerted us to his availability. It’s a big decision for him after playing for England youths but he’s very excited.”
There was also a welcome return to the Scotland setup for Sunderland keeper Craig Gordon, for the first time in almost a year.
