SPL Weekend Roundup: Celtic extend their lead to four points as Rangers are held

Celtic secured a 2-0 win in Paisley against a spirited St.Mirren side. Second half goals from James Forrest and Scott Brown sealed victory in the early Saturday kick off.

With Celtic playing earlier in the day, Rangers knew that a win against Aberdeen would see them close the gap at the top of the table back to two points. However, Ally McCoist’s men were unable to hold their end up and were held to a 1-1 draw by Craig Brown’s side. Kari Arnason fired in the opening goal for the Dons just after the hour mark, before Rangers equalised minutes later through Maurice Edu.

St.Johnstone battled out a five goal thriller with Hibernian at Easter Road, and secured all three points. Hibs fought back twice from a goal down to equalise, but striker Francisco Sandaza secured the winner for the Perth Saints.

Inverness Caley Thistle secured a 1-0 victory over Hearts to give their chances of staying in the SPL a boost, the only goal of the game came from Shane Sutherland on 49 minutes.

Bottom of the table Dunfermline secured a valuable three points with a superb 3-0 win over Kilmarnock. Andrew Barrowman, Joe Cardle and Liam Buchanan all scored the Jim McIntyre’s side.

Motherwell and Dundee United had to settle for a share of the spoils at Tannadice after a 1-1 draw. Stephen Craigan scored an own goal to give Peter Houston’s side a first half lead, before a late goal from Michael Higdon secured a point for Motherwell.
