The arrest comes after the posts were reported to Police, when Rangers defender Kyle Bartley and midfielder Maurice Edu had been targeted on the social networking site Twitter.

A post on the Strathclyde Police twitter page said: “A 41 year old man has been arrested following alleged racist comments made online about two Rangers FC players.”

A Police spokesperson added: “Strathclyde Police continually monitor social networking sites and any reports of criminality will be thoroughly investigated and persons responsible will be dealt with.”

The detained individual is expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday.
