The 2-0 defeat to challengers Hearts and also the 3-0 victory for St.Johnstone away to Dunfermline allowed both sides to move closer to the Steelmen sitting in third position.
McCall said: “Third place is not a given and we have never spoken about getting that position in the league. I’ve been asked whether I would prefer third place or a cup final and I’d rather get third than a final.”
St. Johnstone sit five points behind the Fir Park outfit and Hearts are six points behind, while Dundee United and St. Mirren lie nine points behind Motherwell.
McCall spoke very highly of Hearts after the match in terms of potentially finishing higher up the league. He added: “If Hearts keep the side they’ve got at the moment then they’ve got a good chance of finishing 3rd. They’ve got a good squad. I’m surprised they’re not further up the table as they have got the third best squad in the league as the quality of their substitutions proved.
“It is also highlighted in the fact that we didn’t cope well with Black, Templeton and Taouil today.”
