Arbroath Squander Chances as Airdrie Snatch 3-3 Draw

The Airdrie fans are certainly getting value for money, having seen an incredible 34 goals scored in just their last four games.

Paul Sheerin’s side took the lead in the first minute when Gavin Swankie swung in a free-kick round the short Airdrie wall.

It didn’t take long for the home side to respond after Mark Baxter stopped Willie McLaren’s cross in the box with his hand. Paul Lovering sent the ball straight up the middle and off the bar to equalise.

With five minutes left in the half it was Arbroath who were awarded a penalty, this time Diamonds defender Kevin Green being the culprit of a handball from a cross in by Swankie. Steven Doris’ shot was nearly stopped by Connor Fairley but he couldn’t get enough on it and the Red Litchies were back in front.

Almost immediately it could have been 3-1, Doris putting his shot past Fairley but also just past the post.

Ten minutes into the second half it was indeed 3-1, Swankie again the provider into the middle of the box for Josh Falkingham to score.

Airdrie capitalised on a wild miss-kick from Arbroath goalkeeper and John Boyle’s cross was met by the head of Ryan Donnelly to pull it back to 3-2.

A minute later Ryan Donnelly doubled his tally with another header, this time from a corner – his 18th goal in 19 games this season so far, and the crucial equaliser.

Paul Sheerin decided it was time to bring himself on but he couldn’t copy his heroics of last week’s cup win against non-league side Keith.

The drama didn’t stop there though as ten minutes from time Lovering was booked for diving just outside the box. Swankie also had another two efforts which were both well saved by Fairley. Donnelly could have had a hat-trick but was denied by Hill.

There was a big penalty shout from Airdrie as Graeme Owens thought he’d been tripped by Brian Kerr but referee Charlie Richmond didn’t agree.

Two minutes into injury time saw the golden chance of the game. Donnelly crossed the ball to McLaren who looked bound to score but his shot went to high. On his second spell at Airdrie, he’ll not get a better opportunity to steal three points for his team and gain admiration from the home fans again.

The visitors will look on this match as two points lost, and will have to keep their concentration if they are to stay near the top of the table.
