Sick Facebook Page mocks the Ibrox Disaster 1971

Posted by

Sick Aberdeen and Celtic fans are mocking those who died in the Ibrox Disaster in 1971 on Social Network site Facebook. The page titled, ‘The Awkward Moment when Colin Stein scores and Everyone Falls down the Stairs’ has just over 200 ‘likes’ already, with its profile picture showing the mangled wreckage of the railings of Stairway 13.

The Page, which has already been reported to Facebook, mocks the second Ibrox Disaster on 2nd January 1971, when 66 fans were killed – many of whom were children and over 200 fans were injured.

There have been numerous comments from fans of both Celtic and Rangers venting their disgust at the creators of the page.

One sickened fan stated: “This is a disgrace! Whoever made this is needing shot!

While another said: “This is disgusting, imagine actually trying to joke about something like this.”

Despite widespread condemnation of the page, there were some who openly stated that the page was funny. Aberdeen fan Matt McGillivray mocked: “I must admit it is funny to see Govans finest come out too bemoan this page. Yet their ground is the number one hotspot for all kinds of bile.”

Fellow Dons fan Ross Gibson, who works for Alexander Duthie & Sons Ltd as a plumber, laughed: “They all fell down the stairs. The Rangers end was empty. They all fell down the stairs! Hahaha. Stand free.”

While Celtic fan Daniel McGlinchey stated: “Sick, but funny. Watch the stairs there lads.”

And fellow Celtic fan Mark Lynch implied that the page was not breaking any laws: “I don’t agree with this page, but to be honest theres nothing sectarian in it so what you all going on about??”

Celtic’s Greatest Ever Manager Jock Stein helped lift the injured and dying from the terraces that infamous day, with that haunting black and white image of Stein on the sidelines lifting a Rangers fan onto the pitch.

This year was the 40th anniversary of the disaster, with a minute’s silence held before the Old Firm derby on the 2nd January to commemorate those who died, with both teams wearing black armbands and led out by legendary Old Firm captains John Greig and Billy McNeill.

Colin Dolan of the group Rid The Old Firm Bigotry Once And For All issued a statement condemning the Facebook page. He said: “This page was brought to my attention early this morning. I have to say that at first I was shocked, on reflection I had no reason to be shocked after some of the items, posts, pictures and pages I have seen on facebook.”

“I feel Facebook’s actions are inadequate allowing anyone to begin a facebook page on any topic and go live immediately. Why are no checks done on the person, why no checks regarding page name, several clubs names are being used illegally in my opinion as are the players names. Several pages are set up to enhance their own reputations within circles of bigoted thugs, hiding behind several guises. I immediately highlighted this disgusting page this morning to all the members on our page advising them simply to report it.”

Colin added: “Many people are still affected today by what happened on that tragic day, it is only recently both Rangers and Celtic showed their respect on the anniversary and observed the minute’s silence. We will not tolerate anything like this anymore, we will do everything we can to beat the vile nasty bigots that exist.

“Our 2600-strong members feel that the SFA, the SPL, the Clubs and the players should be doing more, surely together they can challenge facebook or is it just me and the other 2600 that really honestly care?”

Both Celtic and Rangers have yet to comment.

  • Absolutely shocking, the pathetic nature of some people.

  • Andy, I understand that you can not monitor every page on facebook, but you know these pages/groups are there. Maybe if you did spend one day gathering as many of these facebook pages/groups and do an article about the whole disgusting business of online mockery, bigotry, badgering, incitement etc. You say the Ibrox disaster is football related which leds you to believe that you are dismissing the events at Celtic that involved one man, Jim Torbett, abusing a young footballer. Since Alan Brazil made his statement (he later stated Jock Stein knew nothing of the abuse, but slammed the Kelly family for standing by Jim Torbett), Rangers fans have made this more than just a footballing matter. It is now used to bait Celtic fans and if there is no parity in dealing with all these shameful pages, people are going to continue to bait each other. I am a father first and foremost, then somewhere down the line I am a 40 year Celtic supporter. I find your statement, “but we specifically talk about football issues and the Ibrox disaster was a football issue” quite shocking. The abuse of any child at a football club, is a football issue, no matter how distasteful it may be. The real problem seems to be that Rangers supporters do not mind the “Big Jock Knew” statement (both Ted McMinn and Lisa Swanson put it on twitter last season), but any mention of the Ibrox disaster brings revulsion from them. I run a Celtic group on facebook and it has a zero tolerance for any sort of Rangers hating (banter is allowed but not hatred), bigotry, sectarianism, hardcore republicanism, hardcore socialism etc. I have personally banned members for breaking these rules as the group is a celebration of Celtic, not a mouth piece for all the above mentioned rubbish that finds it’s way on to football groups. I and the other admins have agreed that if the group is not hardcore enough for people, they can go elsewhere. I am from Derry and I have certain views on life. But none of those views belong in football, through many from both the main two religions think differently to me. If I and the other admins within our group can hold fast to certain standards, why can the rest of the footballing world not do the same. That statement is aimed at yourself Andy. The events at Celtic Boys Club, is a football related matter. The Ibrox disaster, is a football related matter. Maybe you and I have different standards when it comes to life. My MSP certainly sees it differently to you. He has informed me that he will take soundings from colleagues, and then move forward. He also stated that he believes it will be dealt with as a UK issue, rather than a Scottish one.

  • Why should Celtic and Rangers feel the need to comment on a shitty little page with a couple of hundred ‘likes’ created by some retarded moron?

    A total non-story.

  • I think you should mention that most of the ‘likes’ are people liking it just so they can comment, since you can’t comment on a facebook page unless you have liked it.

    • question is WHY have they not unliked it then if it is just those commenting their disgust?

      • How do you know they haven’t? For all you know it’s different people liking it when others have unliked. Also, maybe they just stayed on so they could continue to hound the page admin to close it down. I really had to explain that?

  • How can supporters from Celtic..who are perfectly right to complain about any ‘sick’ songs or get annoyed at stuff that is posted on forums by Rangers supporters..then try and justify a page devoted to ‘ordinary’ football fans who went to a game and lost their lives.
    I’m not olsd enopugh to remember Jock Stein..but my Dad and uncles all big Rangers fans have nothing but praise for the man.
    I’m sure most Rangers fans of that age share their opinions,.
    Any RATIONAL human being would be disgusted at this particular page on facebook.
    The sad thing is..that the guys who are saying it’s okay..do not sound like they have no education.
    That makes them seem worse..aand very, very bigoted.

    • Exactly Davy most who spout this bile I doubt were born then. But the majority of Celtic fans are condemning those who spout this bile. But its not just Celtic fans mate its Aberdeen fans also who are mocking.

  • Shocking and disgusting!!
    ~~~~ get those responsible BANGED UP…… as promised by Salmon & Co
  • Good to see the good true fans of celtic condem this Facebook page . Like the true gers fan had towards the great tommy burns . But there is always the scum . They need help . Sad and we know there names. silly boys
  • when i seen this digusting so called page/comment i couldnt believe in this day and age there are still clowns allowed to publish these pages,where are the so called website police promised from the events of last year,true celtic men/women will be hanging there heads in shame. HH
  • no scum words Andy? attention seeking at it’s worst. I’ll hazzard a guess you wont allow this post?
    • How is it attention seeking to report this disgusting and vile facebook page? But hey nice of you to attack me rather than those who were behind the facebook page – at least we know where you stand eh?
  • Thanks for the reply Andy, As Logiebear says above there are and there will always be subhuman football fans from all teams who indulge in this kind of “banter” as Jim Traynor call it, There is no balance in your piece and as usual your going for the news now headline hits
    • I dont need the newsnow headline hits Gerry, I report on what I see fit to do so not because it gets a few more extra hits. If I cared solely about the hits I would just report on Celtic and Rangers, doing nothing else.
      And tell me how can you balance up an article on someone mocking the Ibrox Disaster? It is an action that should not be balanced, it needs to be put out there in all its vileness for the fans to take note and denounce, to denounce the individuals responsible.
  • No clubs fans are without fault,,,especially rangers fans,,but that’s what we have today,,keyboard hardmen who are not very bright,,but if you listen to frankie Boyle and loads of other comedians there stuff ain’t much better,,,and they get paid for it.
  • Shocking that some morons would choose to like a facebook page like this and I am sure that real Celtic fans condemn this….
    My father is a Rangers man but my mother and uncles were in no doubts what team I would support as I grew up but it was never about racial hatred and all about the football and some colourful banter!
    The sooner writers stop bringing up stupid stories like this one the better! It serves no purpose other than to gloriously condemn the utter tadger that opened the facebook page in the first place!
    • Dougie why should we ignore it? Ignoring it would give them free reign to continue their vile posting of such pages. Highlight it, report it, get the Cops involved and then get them arrested.
  • While I condemn the FB page without hesitation, I do think you’ve twisted the words of one of the Aberdeen fans.
    Despite widespread condemnation of the page, there were some who openly stated that the page was funny. Aberdeen fan Matt McGillivray mocked: “I must admit it is funny to see Govans finest come out too bemoan this page. Yet their ground is the number one hotspot for all kinds of bile.”
    I don’t think he means “funny” as in “haha”, instead I think he’s pointing out an irony which raises a decent point for debate.
    Just my 2p worth.
    • Brian you have the right to have your two pence worth – but the Aberdeen fan in question failed to even slam the comments mocking the Ibrox Disaster and he did mock, the second Dons fan blatantly laughed at it – despite his later actions to try and delete his comments.
  • Aye but I’d say there’s a difference between not slamming comments and “openly stating the pages are funny”
    Given that it’s folk real names being banded about, I’d personally have erred on the side of caution on this one.
    • Thanks for the vote of confidence Brian.
      As you rightly point out at no point did I say I found the Ibrox disaster funny. What I did find strange and funny was the huge amount of Rangers fans posting sectarian abuse as a retort to the page.
      I myself was invited to allow a Priest to do unmentionable things to me. They obviously do not realise that “Scotland’s” problem is actually just theirs as where I come from Religion is not an issue.
      John also backs up my other point that when “Big Jock Knew” is doing the rounds you don’t see any of holier than thou side of rangers fans then. When they are basically laughing at child abuse. I would like to point out my views are in now way sectarian but majority of the posts from Rangers “fans” were sectarian.
      In my view a section of Old Firm fans are and always will be living in the dark ages.
      Also I agree with Brian posting where the other lad works is a bit low…are we hoping for some vigilante action? Or for the lad to get the sack!!?
      I hope I have cleared up any confusion about what I do and do NOT find funny.
      • Must say i find it incredible the way certain people think that the RC Church is the only religion that has problems with child abuse bit of reasearch required various outher religions & places of work have just as high a percentage(in some cases higher) with regard to this problem.
  • I Would just like to say after the Aberdeen fan made this the Rangers fans(well if u call them fans) made a page about celtic fans being kiddie touchers!!. Then a Celtic fan Martin Mc Caulay made 2 others that were horrendous!! He has openly boasted that he has 140 fake profiles and he,s and i quote “fighting fire with fire”This sad individual needs to be stopped and has admitted he started the page and is,nt hiding as he isnt scared of Strathclydes finest!!. This guy spouts bile about the Ibrox disaster regularly on the banter pages and upsets a lot of people!. He needs to be bannd facebook no who he is and yet nothing changes. I am a Rangers fan but theres no place in football for this bile that will continue to happen as long as there is Osama aka Martin Mc Caulays in this world. Most of the Celtic support dont like him so why not report him?. Rangers have bannd 600 fans from Ibrox while Celtic 6 not sure there accurate but its the comparision. Dont dare tell me theres not as many fans at Celtic doing this bcos i attend the games and no there is!!. The law needs to be changed and fb need to act quicker and no the rivalary in the area,s they serve as i too run a fb page for fans and we do not tolerate it but have,nt had to bann any1 for it bcos the majority are coming round to the bannd words and are stopping using them. Bring back good old fashioned rivalary and we,ll all be happy bcos its about football.
    .
    • Fair comment Jackie but the problem lies with general public mindset the amount of sick humour i have heard in various workplaces throughout Scotland with nobody apart from myself saying this is not funny is unbelievable.BTW i have been laughed at & ridiculed big time for doing this!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • i think bigotry whether it is gers fans(my team) or celtic aberdeen hearts hibs etc is wrong i say jail them
  • Matt McGillivray go on nearly any celtic blog and youll see more than enough sectarian comments so please dont sit there and think its all one sided because it isnt
