SFL Weekend Round-up 20th August 2011

As the Auld Firm seem to have decided to play pass the parcel with the league title even this early on in the season last weekend saw its usual set of surprises and challenging results in the SFL. Hamilton going form 5 goals to struggling to gain 1 in SFL 1, the Blue Brazil playing  like..er Brazil in their match away to Airdrie United and who would have thought Annan Athletic would be the only team in Scotland retaining a 100% perfect record in the league so far!?

Ayr United 2 Falkirk 2

Ayr managed a draw after losing the first goal in only 8 minutes to Kallum Higginbotham. Gareth Wardlaw drew them level in 21 minutes before Ayr suffered a sucker punch at half time, Farid El Alagui getting Falkirk’s 2nd. An Eddie Malone free kick ion the 60th made it all square but in a high-octane game Ayr’s Martyn Campbell was sent off and a final minute winner was chalked off for offside for the Bairns.

Livingston 4 Dundee 2

Livi continue their impressive start to the season with a 4-2 victory against a team that had been tipped to be promotion candidates. Dundee did try to claw their way back into the tie nut the derring do of last year seems to have deserted Dens Park for the moment. Iain Russell and Kenny Deuchar put Livingston 2 up in only 13 minutes. Kenny Deuchar made it 3-0 in 59 minutes before Gary Irvine got one back for Dundee on the 61st minute. Livingston goalkeeper, Andrew McNeil managed to help Dundee by putting into his own net in 65 minutes making it 3-2. Keaghan Jacobs though made it 4-2 right at the death.

Partick Thistle 1 Hamilton Academical 1

Billy Reid will be scratching his head after seeing his team chuck 5 in last week and then struggle to find one against Partick. It took until the 66th minute for Christie Elliot to put Partick ahead but on the 76th minute Simon Mensing drew Hamilton level.

Raith Rovers 1 Greenock Morton 1

Allan Moore was an unhappy man at the end of this game and even being 3rd in the league won’t satisfy him. Loan striker Stephen Reynolds had put Raith ahead in the 32nd minute and Paul Di Giacomo levelled 6 minutes later.

Ross County 2 Queen of the South 0

Derek Adams was unsurprisingly happy with the result as they had conceded 5 the week before. It wasn’t all plain sailing as they had to recover from going down to 10 men. Stuart Kettlewell went in the 70th minute for a tackle on Queen’s Stephen Simmons. Staggies supporters must have feared the worst as it was still 0-0. Steven Craig got the first in the 87th minute and then the 2nd in the 90th to make his introduction as a substitute seem inspired.

Airdrie United 1 Cowdenbeath 5

This was a classic encounter and one for the Blue Brazil faithful to savour for years to come. Airdrie went ahead in the 6th minute through Ryan Donnelly and were on top in the game. Then we saw Jon Robertson on the 37th and Scott Linton on the 45th put Cowdenbeath in front. The 2nd half was all Cowdenbeath as Lewis Coult, Scott Linton with his 2nd of the game and Jordan Morton finished the scoring and the game.

Arbroath 3 East Fife 0

Paul Sheerin’s side swept aside the promotion hopefuls East Fife impressively with Gavin Swankie opening the scoring in 28 minutes and Steven Doris with a double in the 2nd half. Highly impressive midfielder Lee Sibanda caught the eye and proves that Arbroath may be swanky but they are far from a one man team.

Brechin City 3 Dumbarton 3

It was honours even as Dumbarton imploded in the 2nd half for the 2nd week in a row. 2-0 up at the interval it was 3-2 until the final minute and Scott Agnew saved the Sons. Agnew had opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a free kick before James Lyden doubled it. Gary Fusco, a Paul McManus penalty and 1 from David McKenna along with Dumbarton’s Alan Lithgow being sent off in the first 9 minutes of the 2nd half set up the barnstorming finish.

Forfar Athletic 2 Stenhousemuir 3

5 goals in the North came through Brown Ferguson setting Stenny up in the 22nd before Stewart Kean made it 2-0. After half time Chris Templeman and then David Mowat made it all square. Iain Thomson got all 3 points for the visitors in the 62nd minute.

Stirling Albion 2 Albion Rovers 2

Paul Martin’s team battled hard for this draw. Stirling were 2-0 up until the 82nd minute! Devon Jacobs in the 34th and Scott Davieson in the 76th had put them there comfortably. Scott Chaplain in the 82nd and then Barry Russel from 25 yards out in the 88th made it honours even.

Annan Athletic 2 Alloa Athletic 0

Annan remain on top after Ian Harty put them ahead in 33 minutes followed by David Cox in the 64th. Annan went down to 10 men when Scott Gibson was sent off in the 70th but Alloa couldn’t make the advantage pay.

Clyde 1 Montrose 0

Clyde took all 3 points when Stephen McDonald scored in the 50th minute against Montrose. Paul Lunan of Montrose walked after 85 minutes for a 2nd bookable offence.

East Stirling 0 Peterhead 2

John Sheran will be mightily relieved after winning away at East Stirling. Bryan Deasley got the first on 37 minutes whilst Rory McAllister got one from the spot in the 67th. East Stirling have reserved their traditional bottom spot for now.

Elgin City 2 Queens Park 0

Graeme Beveridge in the 7th and Craig Guinn in the 29th sealed both points for Elgin to push Elgin’s place for promotion further up the league table.

Stranraer 2 Berwick Rangers 1

Stranraer got all 3 points at home through a Chris Aitken shot from the edge of the box and Craig Malcolm scoring from range. Berwick managed a consolation through Fraser McLaren – the pick of the gaols from 35 yards.
