Europa League Draw: Hearts v Spurs, Maribor v Rangers, FC Sion v Celtic

The draw for the Europa League Play-off round was made at Nyon, Switzerland this afternoon and it has thrown up an exciting Battle of Britain tie between Hearts and Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs who finished fifth in the English Premier League are favourites to go through, while it is a money-spinning tie for Vladimir Romanov’s side whose new manager Paulo Sergio led the Jambos to a 5-2 aggregate win over Hungarian side Paksi in the previous round.

Rangers – who dropped out of the Champions League qualifiers after a 2-1 aggregate defeat to Malmo – will face Slovenian side NK Maribor with the first leg in Slovenia on the 18th. Rangers last faced NK Maribor in the Champions League qualifiers in 2001, beating the Slovenian side 6-1 on aggregate. Tore Andre Flo [3], Claudio Caniggia [2] and Christian Nerlinger scored the goals for the Ibrox side. Darko Milanic’s team won the Slovenian title for a ninth time last season.

SPL runners-up Celtic were drawn away to Swiss outfit FC Sion for the first leg on the 18th with the second leg at Parkhead. FC Sion finished fourth in the Swiss league last season, while they are currently in third place after three games this term. Sion are managed by former France international Laurent Roussey, and lifted their 12th Swiss Cup last season.

Ties to be played on the 18th and 25th August 2011. However there is a clash between Celtic and Rangers who cannot play on the same night, and it may see one of the club’s playing on the 24th for the second leg rather than 25th.
