A tale of two rookie managers but the same potential ending


The Old Firm have a rich history in world football and with that history the clubs can boast some legendary players and managers that have graced the shirts of both clubs. While their dominance continues unabated in Scotland, in Europe it is a different story altogether. Last week both sides had to contend with poor results against lesser opposition – Celtic drawing 0-0 at home against FC Sion and Rangers capitulating late on in Slovenia, losing 2-1 to NK Maribor.

While the quality on the field has dropped since the heydays of the 1960s and 70s, the clubs could still attract managers like Martin O’Neill, Walter Smith, Dick Advocaat, Gordon Strachan and Paul Le Guen to a lesser extent. But today both sides of the Old Firm employ rookie managers in Neil Lennon (Celtic) and Ally McCoist (Rangers).
