It is a very tough draw for Levein’s side as they look to qualify for a major tournament since France 1998.
They will face familiar opponents in Wales, who they defeated in the Carling Nations Cup on the 25th May winning 3-1 in Dublin. The last time the two sides faced one another in a World Cup qualifier was back in September 1985 drawing 1-1, a game synonymous with the death of legendary manager Jock Stein on the touchline.
Scotland have never faced Serbia, while they have faced Croatia on three occasions, drawing in every game. They will also face Belgium another team we have not faced much with only two games being played with results of a draw and a win for the Belgians.
While the draw could have been a lot tougher for Scotland, the teams we have drawn will see the Dark Blues up against it in as soon as the games kick off in September 2012.
Speaking after the draw, Craig Levein, said: “The draw could have been a lot worse and with every draw like this there will be a lot of homework to be done on our opposition and I am not going to try and make predictions at this early stage.”
“However, I am confident that this squad has the talent and the collective determination to succeed but we will have to work hard. Qualification for Euro2012 of course is my immediate priority and my time is devoted to making that happen and next month’s clash with Denmark will be vital for our preparation.”
“Belgium was probably the toughest team we could have drawn from pot 3 and in Serbia and Croatia we have drawn two very accomplished teams and all of these games will provide a very tough challenge for my squad.”
On being drawn against Wales, Levein added: “There was a lot of intrigue ahead of the draw over there being a home nation tie and it will be exciting for the fans to see us take on Wales in the qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup.”
