When you think of New York Cosmos, you think of Pele and Franz Beckenbauer playing in Giants Stadium during the 1970s and 80s. But with their retirement brought the demise of not only the Cosmos but also the NASL IN 1984. However 26 years later the Cosmos have made a return, albeit without players. But who needs players just yet when you have Pele as your Honorary President – certainly a step up for the Brazilian after advertising a wee blue pill for erectile dysfunction – and Eric Cantona as their Director of Football.
So for the time being Umbro and New York Cosmos have teamed up with one another to market the Cosmos merchandise, to spread the word around the world to raise the profile of the side once more. Certainly it will get more mileage with the likes of Pele and Cantona at the helm than Joe Bloggs fae Brooklyn.
And so in an Independent Football Shop on Lothian Road in Edinburgh, a million miles away from New York, the new Cosmos kit was launched along with the obligatory retro gear also. Steven Dow of Football Nation invited the creme de la creme of the Scottish Football blogging fraternity and Scotzine, to attend the kit launch.
So we travelled from the West coast into enemy territory, driving down Gorgie Road past Tynecastle and getting lost inevitably in that maze, Edinburgh call a City Centre.
Steven met us at the door with a few warm welcomes and a bit of an intro into tonight’s festivities, followed by a few Budweisers. We had a wee look around the store and was mightily impressed with what Football Nation had on offer for the passing public.
However tonight was all about the launch of the New York Cosmos gear and Steven gave a wee speech introducing the kit, what the Cosmos were all about and what they are now doing. Once Steven had said the obligatory speech, we browsed through the Cosmos merchandise, while chatting amongst one another about all things football.
Sadly our resident photographer could not make it because of some halfwits in a Parkhead garage, but we managed to take a few snaps using our wee nifty iPhone.
And it was great to finally put some faces to the likes of @RedThom @STVGrant @thefootyblognet and @ScotFootBlog. Despite the briefness of the chats because of our prior commitments.
While the Cosmos may not be a force on the pitch yet, it is starting to take on the world as a global brand. And by the looks of the gear, both Cosmos and Umbro are doing a good job at reviving the auld look of the New York side.
Once again I would like to thank Steven over at Football Nation for his hospitality, the Budweiser and of course the mini-hamburgers. If anyone is ever in Edinburgh, take a wander down Lothian Road and pop into Football Nation.
