Rangers keeper Allan McGregor looks set for a move to the English Premier League after stalling on signing a new contract extension with the Ibrox side, that would have seen him tied to the SPL Champions until 2015. But that contract was offered in August and three months later, the keeper has to date failed to sign on the dotted line.
And with the keeper already won everything in the SPL, he could now set his sights on a move south, where he is not short of suitors, with the likes of Aston Villa and Manchester United keeping tabs on the in form keeper.
The keeper’s current deal ends in the summer of 2013, and if a concrete bid of around £6 million comes in for the keeper either in January or in the summer then the Ibrox could be tempted to cash in on one of their prized assets. With understudy Neil Alexander already committing to a new deal, the sale of McGregor although a blow in the short-term, would let Alexander to step into the void and allow Rangers to strengthen in the outfield.
And while Walter Smith has maintained that he must be allowed to retain all his current players, the fact that Smith is resigning at the end of the season would not be lost on the likes of McGregor. And with McGregor at the ripe old age of 28, his best years lie ahead of him and he would most certainly be wanting to test himself against the best that the world has to offer and that would lead him to move to the English Premier League.
Aston Villa manager Gerard Houllier has revealed his admiration for the Rangers keeper, and recently sent up assistant Gary McAllister and goalkeeping coach Rafael Gonzalez to watch McGregor against Manchester United last week.
‘Yes, we went to see McGregor play in the Champions League tie,’ confirmed Houllier. I am very happy with Brad Friedel but I am conscious he is 39. I would be silly not to look at the long term.’
Manchester United are also on the hunt for a new keeper, due to Edwin van de Sar’s impending retirement. And despite the Old Trafford side signing Danish keeper Anders Lindegaard, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is looking for another keeper to slot straight into the Number One jersey. And Allan McGregor is one of three names on SAF’s hit list. The other two are Maarten Stekelenburg of Ajax and German national keeper Manuel Neuer of Schalke 04.
